Beautiful Tuscan Cottage with Private Pool & Spectacular Views
A beautifully restored two-bedroom stone cottage with a wonderfully secluded private swimming pool, stunning mountain views and approximately six hectares of gardens, farmland and woodland, just 10 minutes' drive from the medieval town of Barga.
Set high in the Tuscan hills, Mengarino is full of rustic charm, with original chestnut beams, terracotta floors and traditional furnishings. Its peaceful setting and breathtaking views make it a lovely retreat for couples and families.
The outdoor spaces are particularly special. The extensive panoramic terrace offers spectacular views across the valley towards Barga. Enjoy leisurely meals beneath the covered gazebo, cook outdoors using the oven and BBQ, or simply relax with a glass of wine as the lights of the town twinkle below. On clear evenings, the stars are extraordinary!
A short, steep walk through the grounds leads to the beautiful 10m x 5m infinity-style swimming pool, with Roman steps, sunbathing space and a shaded pergola. Positioned high above the cottage and completely out of sight of the buildings, the pool is reserved exclusively for guests, offering wonderful privacy and unforgettable views of the surrounding mountains.
The lovingly maintained grounds are a delight, with plenty of space to enjoy the scenery and nature. A few resident donkeys live in a separate part of the land, adding to the rural charm.

Privacy and owner arrangements
For the 2027 season, the owner will be using a separate barn on site as temporary sleeping accommodation whilst his own home is renovated. He is away throughout the day and evenings, returning simply to sleep. He discreetly attends to pool maintenance early in the morning and occasionally waters the gardens later in the day. The advantage of the owner being there is that he will bring pastries, honey etc and you will also be offered a free pizza evening if this is of interest!
The holiday cottage is entirely self-contained, with its own outdoor kitchen/dining area, whilst the secluded swimming pool is exclusively for guests.
Exploring the area
The beautiful medieval town of Barga is just a 10-minute drive away, with its winding cobbled streets, atmospheric piazzas, excellent restaurants and summer concerts.
Mengarino is also an excellent base for exploring the Garfagnana, with its mountain scenery, picturesque villages, walking routes and wonderful local food. There are also adventure parks including a zip wire park, water canyoning, river rafting and paddle boarding for all ages. Visit the local mediaeval fortress, dammed lakes, the National Park of Orecchiella or the local Wind Caves.

Please note: The swimming pool is reached via a steep uphill walk but if you have mobility issues you can drive up on the path.

The name of the internet connection at the property says it all: "Il Paradiso." Simonetta and Marco have truly created a little paradise on this hillside above Barga. We (7 adults) felt at home immediately. It is a little secluded, but Barga is only around 15 minutes away, and a large supermarket is another 5 minutes beyond that.
We have nothing but praise for the accommodation, the swimming pool, the pizza oven (where you can make your own pizzas), the fantastic views, the explanations from Simonetta (in English) and Marco (in Italian), and the unexpected thoughtful touches. In short, we enjoyed ourselves in a way that only Italy can offer. Thank you for everything, and if possible, we will certainly return.

We had a restful and relaxing time in this lovingly restored
holiday home. With its remote location, it's the perfect place to
escape the stress of everyday life.

Our group of 3 adults, 2 children and dog spent a fantastic
holiday in this accommodation. The location with its breathtaking
mountain views delighted us every day. The large, well-kept
infinity pool with spectacular views deserves a special mention.
The accommodation consists of a small house for 2 people, a larger
one for 5 people & a charming tea house. Each building is
perfect for the number of guests & exudes a cosy atmosphere.
Despite the more compact size, they are fully equipped with
bathrooms & well-equipped kitchens. The tea house offers an
additional space to relax. There is an animal enclosure with
tortoises in the grounds, which particularly delighted our
children. A three-headed donkey troop roams the neighbourhood in a
friendly manner - an endearing sight that made our stay even more
special. The spacious grounds are equipped with idyllic seating
areas to enjoy the view or relax. The cooking facilities were
excellent and everything was provided. The 300 year old pizza oven
made for memorable dinners. An outstanding highlight was the
incredible friendliness of the owners who made us feel like we were
staying with friends. The accommodation was ideal for us, with
plenty of space & excellent care. The cleanliness was also top
notch. The altitude kept us mosquito free. Car is necessary to
explore the surrounding area, but the seclusion&quiet were
worth it.

Fabulous place to stay for a peaceful time in beautiful Tuscany.
The pool area was amazing and the views stunning. The eating area
was lovely also with fabulous views. The properties were well
equipped and the tortoises and donkeys were a hit. Barga is just
down the road and is delightful with lots of bars and restaurants.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will miss the peace and
tranquility - thank you to our host Simonetta.

The pool and the views are even more beautiful than in the pictures and make up for the steep and narrow, slightly longer journey and the somewhat outdated house. It's the last house on the mountain, which is what makes it so appealing, pure peace and quiet apart from the barking dogs from the neighboring mountains. In case of problems, the owners help quickly and friendly, we were even spoiled with their own honey and great pastries. The Garfagnana is very beautiful and Barga has become one of our favorite cities, as well as Lucca and the adventure canyons are also worthwhile.
We were there with 5 people and 3 dogs. The owners are really nice and helpful. The forest path to the site is a bit bumpy, but once you get there you forget everything around it. We want to come back :-)

We stayed at the Mengarinella villa and had the whole place to ourselves as a family. The photographs do not do it justice, it is a stunning property. The attention to detail was very much appreciated, the equipment, the layout with different buildings and of course the pool overlooking the mountains. Lorraine in the UK, really guided us through our booking (we had first booked the villa pre covid) and answered all of our questions promptly. In Tuscany, Simonetta welcomed us to the property and helped us out with taxi bookings and brought us a tray of lovely pastries. Norhing was too much -honestly the guest experience could not have been better. We loved seeing the goats on the move and the vista that we saw every day is one we will remember forever. Thanks so much Tuscan Retreats we really did have a holiday of a life time. As a hint - get an automatic and 4 wheel drive car to drive to and from the villa. It really makes for a smoother safer jouerney. Also there are two guard dogs that you will meet at a property on the way up to and down from the villa. Be aware that they do their job very well. Thank you again from a well rested and blissfully happy family.

The place was just as good as we hoped. Lovely outsides and an amazing view over the Apuan Alps and the valley below. Great pool area. 30-40 minutes to beautiful hikes in the mountains and only roughly 1 hour to the ocean and beaches. The host is also very hospitable and helpful. We arrived very late (23.00) due to flight delays so we was unable to buy breakfast because all stores were closed at that time. In the morning we found, on the table outside, that Marko had brought us a plate of pastry and tea. It really saved our first morning! We can absolutely recommend staying at this lovely place.

We were as a family with 3 children (9, 14, 16) at the end of August 2021 for a week in this great property. The view and the pool about 10 x 5 meters are great! The homeowners take very loving care of their guests and the property. The pool is cleaned every day and the flowers are watered regularly - only through this special care does this old property get its special charm and cozy atmosphere. The pizza oven was a huge enrichment for us, because the homemade pizzas and rolls were delicious. The two separate houses also meant that we could each have their own empire. Both houses have a kitchen with all the necessary utensils. We cooked a lot and enjoyed cooking and we didn't miss anything. Due to the hillside location, you will always find a nice place to linger.

We had a wonderful stay and enjoyed the view from the terrace and the pool. Our host was very kind and helped us with everything. The uphill road is managable, the area around is great and you can relax without any close neighbours.

All the pictures can not capture the beauty of the pool area and the stunning view in the mountains and the valley from the whole property! You have two separate houses, for 4 and 2 people, in a typical antique tuscany style. Cleanliness is ok. Because we spend 95% except the nights outside and the pool, at the bbq and the dining area this was no problem. Two points good to know: if you love cooking yourself note that the kitchen is rather poorly equipped and WiFi is only available in the main house inside. Mrs Simonetta and her team take very good care of you and help where possible! On departure day it's quite hectic because cleaning and maintenance work starts already early in the morning. We spend a fantastic week and would love to go back…
